Timanous welcomes Heidi Krieger as our Office Manager and Family Liaison We are pleased to announce Heidi's hiring. In addition to working throughout the offseason to help keep the Timanous ship sailing smoothly, Heidi will work closely with our summer staff in the office while at camp. Heidi has been working with or on behalf of children and youth of all ages for most of her career. One of her greatest joys and privileges was serving as the Director/ED of Camp To Belong Maine for over 12 years. Camp To Belong reunites siblings separated by foster care for a week at summer camp. This week provides these brothers and sisters with the chance to be kids and form memories that will last a lifetime. She comes to us after 6 years in the Brunswick School Department working in special education, primarily with students needing support due to behavior challenges. She is excited to make this shift back to youth camping and is thrilled to become part of the Timanous team. In her time off, she enjoys spending time with family, friends and her cat, Georgie as well as working on various creative projects. Welcome, Heidi! Dear Timanous Family,
We are pleased to share two reports with you. The first is our 2021 Annual Report. It illustrates our successful recovery from the pandemic-related closure in 2020 as well as the completion of the Second Century Campaign under the banner of Rise, Camp Timanous. We are truly thankful for the broad and generous support of our extended family, and the strong financial position we find ourselves in. We hope you will take some time to read and enjoy this recognition of our vibrancy and tremendous good fortune. As powerful as our 2021 Annual Report is, it only tells part of our strength and forward momentum. We are equally energized about the exciting future we have charted with our first strategic plan, entitled Tradition and Stewardship, 2022-2026. In true Timanous spirit, this plan is the result of a community effort that garnered input and feedback from alumni, current parents and camp staff, as well as board and director participation. Major goals of the plan include investing in the quality and continuity of our staff, diversifying our community, investing in our infrastructure, and ensuring respectful stewardship of our cherished camp. You can review the plan in more detail at timanous.org/plan. Thank you to those who took the time to contribute to focus group meetings, providing valuable insights to the planning process. We look forward to celebrating all of these positive developments with you at our 105th Anniversary Reunion this August 12th-14th. You can register beginning on March 1st at timanous.org/105; we do hope you will join us! Sincerely, Thanks to everyone who contributed to this year's Timanews. We hope it brings back great memories of camp and reconnects you to your Timanous family. Content includes:
If you haven't already, you should be receiving your hard-copy version soon. You can also read it online here. Dear Timanous Family, We’re thrilled to share the fantastic news that we surpassed all of our goals for the Second Century Campaign! It is even more gratifying that completing the campaign comes on the heels of a truly successful summer back at camp. Due to the abiding spirit and extraordinary generosity of our entire community, Camp Timanous will no doubt continue to thrive for another 100 years.
Five years ago, a small group of alumni formed the Timanous Foundation in order to preserve camp for future generations. So much has been accomplished since then: camp is operating as a nonprofit; alumni across all eras have never been more engaged; Garth Altenburg is starting his 4th year as camp’s Director; and access to the Timanous experience has already been greatly expanded. With all of these milestones, the fundamental mission remains: Timanous will continue to positively impact the growth of Body, Mind and Spirit for generations of campers to come. There are so many who have contributed to the campaign’s success, but we wanted to give a special thank you to these individuals in particular: More details will be forthcoming in the 2021 Annual Report, including a list of donors to the campaign. Until then, please accept our deepest gratitude for your support, for your camp spirit, and for being a part of the Timanous family as we usher camp through its second century!
It's hard to believe, but the summer at Timanous is officially complete. Campers departed on Wednesday afternoon, the staff spent all day Thursday putting everything to bed for the offseason, and on Friday the last cars pulled out onto Plains Road for the trip home. Bittersweet as the end of camp always is, this year more than most it was easy to find a sense of gratitude for the fact we were able to have camp at all. Even more important was that camp was as great as ever, when campers needed a year to be outside and with friends more than ever. As you are hearing stories about the summer that was, you can go through all of the great photos throughout each week and all of our camping trips on the Shutterfly site here. Everything is now uploaded, including a few sets of professional photos taken from both sessions, as well as those capturing the final days at camp. Campers had a few more activity periods to finish up awards, or just to take advantage of the opportunity to go for a sail around the Timanous cove with newfound camp friends. On Monday afternoon, we held our annual "Fastest Man" races and crowned champions in the lower bunkline, upper bunkline, and counselor divisions. To cap off a great day, the Twilight League championship game was won by the Hairy Potters. On Tuesday afternoon, we had our final Green vs. Gray competition in the annual Watersports competition, which includes a variety of events of all of our water-based activities, like canoeing, kayaking, swimming, and more. Every camper participates to their level of ability and in events that celebrate and recognize the skills they developed while at camp. It was an absolutely gorgeous day, with the warm sun glinting off the still waters (until, of course, campers dove in and churned through to the other end of the docks!). In between participating in various events, the campers enjoyed hanging out with each other along the waterfront. The spirit of camaraderie was clear all around. Tuesday evening brought the world premier of the 2021 camp movie, entitled "Mouse-ahh-touille", with an amazing cast of camper actors from the youngest to the oldest cabins. Lots of effort was put into the project and everyone had a ton of fun, which was well rewarded with rapt attention from the entire audience and frequent waves of laughter and smiles going around. We set up a projector in front of the office and arranged the camp in the natural amphitheater above it. Afterward, we watched the final slideshow of the summer. It was a meaningful time to relive the moments that made the summer that was. For the final morning of camp on Wednesday, we were fortunate to be in the Barn for Banquet, where we could celebrate the accomplishments of all the campers in this traditional setting with the Halls of Fame from the last 100 years adorning the walls on all sides. After all the awards that were earned were distributed, Garth recognized the many staff members that have now been at camp for 10 or 15 years with the \T/ service medals. Medals were also given to the camper who exemplified the most skill, accomplishment and helpfulness in each activity. To cap off the ceremony, the 2021 Hall of Fame was revealed, with categories like "Most Courteous", "Best Sport", and "Greatest Improvement" recognizing the campers that demonstrated these values that we teach and promote here at Timanous. As we noted at the very beginning of camp, we thought this would be a memorable summer, and it certainly was. Garth, in his Banquet speech, remarked on how the most gratifying realization for him was not that this summer was different or special in any particular way, but rather that it was exactly as camp should be in any normal year. The fact that everyone was able to have this experience together in the year 2021 is something we can all be grateful for.
Thank you, campers and counselors of Camp Timanous, for an amazing summer!! |
