New Camp Director In Place

9/4/2018

Picture
After an exhaustive search process that began in September 2017 involving a number of highly qualified candidates, the Board of Trustees of the Timanous Foundation was pleased to announce the naming of Garth Altenburg as the next Director of Camp Timanous. His many years of relevant experience and his outstanding personal qualities made him a natural choice. Garth comes to us from Camp Chewonki, in Wiscasset, Maine, where he was the Director for the past 13 summers.

Garth brings a deep belief in the power of a summer camp experience as well as an easy-going manner in working with campers, staff, parents and alumni. Timanous is very blessed to find someone with Garth’s combination of passion for the ideals Timanous cherishes together with significant experience running all facets of a boys camp in today’s evolving world. From his first interview through the entire search process, everyone who met Garth found his enthusiasm to be contagious and his dedication to core values to be genuine.

The goal of the search process was to find an individual with exceptional integrity, passion and experience—a combination of attributes not easily found—who could lead Timanous into its second 100 years. Garth fully meets this standard and more. He relates to children and adults with ease and honesty, and has the advanced business skills required to run a successful boys camp.  Even though Garth did not come up through our ranks, we are confident that everyone who meets Garth will find him to be very much a Timanous kind of guy. Please join us in welcoming Garth Altenburg as the new Director of Camp Timanous.

“When I first met Garth, I felt like I was speaking with someone I had worked with for years on Panther Pond. Timanous is so fortunate to be welcoming him and his family to our community.”

To the Timanous Family

Spring, 2018

Greetings! It is with great enthusiasm that I write to you as the new Director of Camp Timanous starting in the Fall of 2018. I am thrilled and honored to be assuming this leadership role and learning about you, your cherished camp, and its history and traditions.

I first visited Camp Timanous during the summer of 2012 as an accreditation visitor for the American Camp Association. Over the course of my visit, I became more and more captivated by the camp as I toured the beautiful campus, observed meaningful activities, and chatted with polite and genuine campers and staff. My professional and personal experiences, along with a deeply held belief in the mission and future vision of Timanous, have me very excited to lead this special camp into a vibrant future that is true to its roots while also thriving financially, culturally and operationally.

The first day of camp in 2019 may seem like a long way away, but by the time camp opens for my first full summer at Timanous, I hope to have met most of our campers and counselors in person and plan to visit during each session of camp this year. Dave, Linda and I, along with the Foundation Board of Trustees, look forward to a series of regional events and visits throughout the next fall and winter, allowing me a chance to get to know our camp families. I want to hear your hopes and dreams for the future of Timanous.

My wife, Heather, and our children Will (15), Ben (13), and Phoebe (11) look forward to being members of the Timanous Family for many years to come. I plan to carry the best of Timanous into its second century while also bringing about some new energy and perspectives. I am thrilled and grateful that Dave and Linda will be available to support me through this transition.

The months of transitions will pass quickly. I hope we have the chance to say hello along the way. In the meantime, please don’t hesitate to reach out—my email is garth@campt.com. Thank you for welcoming me into the Timanous Family.

With warmest regards,
