2021 Camp Schedule

A note on summer planning:
We are expecting to run our traditional full- and half-season sessions at this time, but as we've all learned over the past year, it's important to stay flexible. Circumstances may dictate variations to our plans, but we promise to communicate with you openly and on a regular basis about any shifts in our offerings due to COVID-19. Our 2021 registration policies include a full refund option if that is the case. See our 2021 FAQ for more details about our summer planning.

A note on our session options:
It's more important today than ever for boys to slow down, unplug and connect. A summer at Timanous is a time when your son can recharge from a hectic school year and have the mental and emotional space to develop the interpersonal skills that are so important in life. Through our decades of experience running multiple sessions, we believe that a full seven-week season has a positive impact far beyond what simply doubling the time at camp would suggest. While any summer at Timanous can be a hugely positive experience, we encourage you to consider the opportunity that allows for the most growth.

Summer 2021 FAQ

The questions and answers below reflect our current planning related to COVID-19. Please note that protocols may change; if there are any updates, we promise to relay them as soon as possible. We are actively incorporating all the recommended best practices from the CDC and American Camp Association, as well as our consulting work with Dr. Laura Blaisdell.
PRE-ARRIVAL & DROP-OFF
Will Timanous open in 2021? If so, what is different from 2020?
Our plan is to open camp on Thursday, June 24. We’ll keep monitoring all of the latest trends and data as we evaluate our position, but we feel confident at this time that we will be able to run camp successfully in 2021.

We have a much better understanding of how camps, and specifically Timanous, can manage the associated risks of COVID-19 within a camp population. We’re learning from peer camps that opened in 2020 and are developing an operating plan specific to Timanous in partnership with the leading expert in the field, Dr. Laura Blaisdell.

Please refer to the in-camp operation section of the FAQ below for specific details about our protocols.
Will you change session options or dates if there are more cases in the spring, or restrict access based on regional trends?
We are confident that our operating protocols, including arrivals and departures for all campers who are able to travel to Timanous, will allow us to run our traditional sessions safely with the dates we have listed.

We will remain flexible to ensure the safety of all campers and staff, and if there is a chance that any changes may be needed, we will communicate early and transparently with you so you can plan accordingly.
Is there anything we need to do in the weeks prior to camp?
A healthy camp always begins at home and is particularly important during the pandemic. Camps require diligent consideration of behaviors prior to camp to ensure that Camp can be successful in running a full camp season safely. Campers and staff should participate in only low risk behaviors for at least 10 to 14 days prior to Camp. Low risk behaviors are those that can be done outdoors and/or with masking and physical distancing. Campers and staff should only be unmasked with immediate household family members during this time, specifically not eating in restaurants or other eating venues with individuals outside their family unit.

Large gatherings of groups outside the family household are not recommended; this includes weddings, graduations, religious gatherings, parties and playdates. Attending school, where masking and distancing is diligently employed, has not been shown to increase risk of COVID-19 and may be considered a low risk behavior during this time. Campers and staff are encouraged to discuss their pre-camp plans with Garth should there be any question. Staying healthy at home increases the likelihood for a healthy start to the summer at Timanous.
Will my son need to have testing before he arrives at camp?
Your camper and anyone traveling to camp in the same vehicle will need to be tested within a 3 - 5 day window before arriving at camp. Negative PCR test results from this time period will be needed for your camper and those traveling in the same vehicle in order for him to be dropped off at camp (unless an individual is vaccinated). After testing, we ask for those traveling to camp to quarantine, including those that may be vaccinated. Please be prepared to share proof of this negative test result upon arrival. We will communicate ways to share your results in advance of arrival. Please be in touch with any questions or challenges.
How will vaccines affect your planning? Will you require a vaccine for campers?
At this time we do not expect vaccines to be widely available to our camper population, but we encourage households to pursue vaccines when available according to state guidelines.
How do I get my son to and from camp?
We strongly recommend traveling directly from home to Timanous on the first day of your session (June 24 or July 19) if at all possible, avoiding stops that can lead to exposure. Families traveling from great distances may want to consider early travel to Maine and securing testing in Maine upon arrival. Air travel necessitated by distance is acceptable, but we encourage car travel whenever possible. We will be able to greet campers at Boston Logan Airport or the Portland Jetport when air travel is necessary. At this time, we do not anticipate offering a bus from the New York region.
What will drop-off look like on arrival day?
Please refer to the Travel Options handout for dates and times. We plan to stagger arrivals to limit the number of people at camp at one time. A signup form will be circulated in the spring. Families will be asked to stay in or next to their cars and wear masks during the entire stop. Staff and counselors will greet your camper and help him unload and travel to his cabin. Drop-off will be brief, especially compared to past years when families help their camper settle into his cabin. Please discuss this change with your camper.
Will there be a check-in with the nursing staff?
For each camper, our nursing team will go through a COVID-19 screening (e.g. temperature and symptom checks) and a lice check, and will review any nec
Will he be tested once he’s at camp?
We anticipate testing the entire camp around the fifth day of each session. Waiting five days is the recommended time period to accurately test any infection resulting from travel to camp.
IN-CAMP OPERATION
How will you limit risk of exposure? Will my son need to wear a mask at Timanous?
Our community will be grouped into cohorts similar to family units. Your camper should expect that his cabin group will be his most immediate cohort, and that this will be the group that he primarily interacts with for the first five to seven days of camp. Campers will wear masks at times, but will be able to remove their masks with their cohort much as they do at home with a family unit. We anticipate easing cohort restrictions incrementally as we progress through the session with good testing results and a healthy camp community.

Campers will not need masks when seated at their table with their cohort or in their cabin, including when sleeping. Other indoor gatherings or those with closer proximity will require masks.
Will you still be able to have all-camp activities?
We plan to offer many of our traditional all-camp activities, just in different ways. For example, we’ll still conduct daily flag raising and lowering each day with the entire camp. Instead of one continuous line, we imagine gathering by socially-distanced cohorts around our field. We’ll still be together as a complete camp community, just in a different way. Other events such as Sunday Chapel and Council Fire will likely continue with the full camp but with appropriate modifications.

Our greatest challenge is when we bring the entire camp population together in an indoor space. For those that know Timanous, this means our barn for indoor dining and Tattersall Hall (the Hall) for indoor events in the evenings or on rainy days. Our operating plan calls for the use of large, outdoor tents to decrease density and increase airflow for these two spaces. We’ve already reserved numerous tents so we can move roughly 40% of the camp to outdoor dining and have the entire camp meet under a covered space for all-camp events rather than use the Hall.
Can Timanous still be as meaningful and impactful with these likely limitations and restrictions?
In short and with much confidence, the answer is yes. Things will be different and we all need to be prepared to be flexible, but we believe that summer 2021 will be one of the most rewarding summers ever. Children need the powerful social and developmental growth opportunities that we provide, especially after what may be more than a year of disrupted school and social experiences. Our boys will likely be very much used to wearing a mask and following COVID protocols, and more than happy to do so in setting as beautiful and joyous as camp. We anticipated being able to carry on almost all of our beloved traditions, from regular activities to Sunday Chapel to Council Fire to Saturday cookouts.
Are there people who will be coming and going from camp on a daily basis, or will it be a basically “closed campus”?
There will be people coming and going on a daily basis, but they will not be interacting with campers. For example, our maintenance director lives a short distance from camp, but does not interact with staff or campers. He makes needed repairs on cabins or buildings at times when the campers are not present, such as during meals. Deliveries of food, packages and mail will still require access to camp, but will mostly utilize our back road. Delivery staff have been following COVID-19 protocols for many months now; we view this as a low-risk presence but will also remind our vendors of our safety protocols as we approach the camp season.
How much access will families have to Timanous in 2021? Will we be allowed to visit in the middle of the summer?
Unfortunately, no outside visitors will be permitted this summer as we place the safety of our camp community first. We’re really trying to limit access to Timanous so that we decrease the risk of spreading COVID-19.
Will you still engage in events and activities with Wohelo and other camps?
At this time, no. We will need to maintain the integrity of our “bubble” without exposure to other populations of campers.
Will you still send out camping trips?
We hope to be able to do so as we can maintain social distancing from others while on camping trips. Most of our camping trips travel to remote locations in Maine.
How will you respond to any medical concerns?
We’re hiring a third nurse to supplement our two veteran nurses. All three nurses work in school settings during the academic year, so they are familiar with COVID protocols. Our camp nurses will continue to be supported by our partnerships with a local physician’s office and hospital as needed.
How will you respond if there is a positive test at camp?
We will provide general communication with families regarding any positive cases at Timanous and more detailed communication if there is a positive case in your camper’s cabin. We want you to understand our action plans and safety measures should we encounter a suspected or confirmed case. We are grateful for the expertise and experience of our camp nurses who also worked this past year as school nurses.
Are your counselors ready for this responsibility?
Yes. We are fortunate to have a veteran group of counselors with much experience and a strong commitment to the Timanous experience. We plan to have our counselors arrive and quarantine at Timanous three to four days earlier than normal so we can prepare for the awesome responsibility of welcoming campers. All staff will be trained on safety protocols, including procedures related to sanitizing, cleaning and operating in our cohort groups.

We’re fortunate to have a deep and veteran group of counselors and anticipate being able to maintain our program and the typical Timanous experience, and are prepared to make appropriate modifications if counselors are in quarantine. We’re a community that takes care of each other and steps up when we have to. We recognize the possibility where a greater number of positive cases would likely impact the entire camp and require a larger modification to our summer, but we are confident that our plans and protocols create sufficient safeguards to minimize the chances of this scenario.
